U.S. lawmakers voice support for Israel following the death of Hamas leader

Several U.S. lawmakers have responded to the news that the Israeli military killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Wednesday.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons, a prominent member of the Foreign Relations Committee, stated that the elimination of the militant group's leader signifies that "justice has been done" in relation to the attacks on October 7 in Israel. Sinwar was identified as a principal architect of these assaults.

Coons remarked to CNN that the death of Sinwar, coupled with Israel's military successes, could potentially revive the stalled negotiations regarding a hostage agreement in Gaza and contribute to advancing regional peace. He urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to explore any opportunities that may arise for securing the release of hostages.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham characterized Israel's action against Sinwar as "a significant blow to Hamas and Iran," which supports the militant organization.

He further stated in a press release that the most effective response to Iran and its terrorist affiliates is to replace violence and animosity with lasting security, peace, and prosperity in the region.

Republican Representative Carlos Gimenez expressed his unwavering support for Netanyahu, asserting that there is "only one way to deal with" those who have threatened Israel "for decades."

"I stand firmly behind Israel and their current efforts. Many of these leaders have long believed they were untouchable, that they could act with impunity while Israel would not respond. However, they are now realizing that the situation has changed," he conveyed to CNN.

The lawmaker also held Hamas responsible for the civilian casualties in Gaza, where Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
